Progress Over Perfection

Dear readers,

Working with children on the autism spectrum or with other developmental disabilities is never about chasing perfection — it’s about embracing growth, connection, and the beauty of individual progress.

Thanks for reading All’s Substack! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.

In this issue, we’re talking about a critical mindset shift: valuing progress over perfection in our day-to-day work with neurodiverse kids.

🌟 Why “Progress Over Perfection” Matters

Perfection often sets up unrealistic expectations — ones that don’t reflect how neurodiverse children develop and thrive. Progress, on the other hand, honors the journey.

When we recognize and celebrate small steps, we validate the effort it takes to:

  • Sit through a circle time without support

  • Navigate a sensory trigger and remain regulated

  • Attempt a math problem instead of shutting down

  • Raise a hand in class, even with hesitation

These are not small victories. They are milestones. They show resilience, growth, and determination.

🧩 What Progress Looks Like in the Real World

Progress doesn’t follow a straight line. It might include steps forward, plateaus, or even backslides — and that’s okay.

Progress might be:

  • Using a visual schedule without prompting

  • Tolerating a new food during lunch

  • Transitioning between activities without protest

  • Requesting a break using AAC or a visual card

Every one of these moments deserves to be seen — and celebrated.

❤️ The Role of Adults: Support, Not Perfection

Whether you’re a teacher, parent, or support staff, your mindset shapes how a child experiences learning and growth. Adopting a progress-first approach means:

  • Offering praise for effort, not just outcomes

  • Avoiding comparisons to neurotypical peers

  • Giving grace on hard days

  • Focusing on what's working, not just what's missing

We create safe spaces when we value who a child is rather than who we think they should be.

🎉 Celebrate the Small Wins

Let’s be the adults who cheer the loudest for the quietest steps. Let’s post about the child who said one word today, or the teen who made it through their entire school day with fewer supports.

Because that’s where the real progress lives — in the small, powerful wins that most of the world never sees.

Thanks for reading — and thank you for choosing progress over perfection. Your belief in each child’s potential is what changes lives.
